I believe in being myself every step of the way and not hiding my true self from society.     -Kalki Koechlin

Kalki Koechlin, Deepika Padukone and Somy Ali recently came out with stories of the trauma they faced – physical and mental.
Their inspiring stories speak out and speak up about abuse and depression.

Kalki Koechlin won the Best Actress award for ‘Margarita with a Straw’ at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). In an interview with the Humans of Bombay, Kalki opened up about her excruciatingly painful past to encourage people to speak up about abuse.

Deepika Padukone, one of India’s most popular film stars and and is the recipient of two Filmfare Awards, has spoken at length about battling debilitating depression, which led her to seek help and eventually take medication. Padukone said people struggled to understand her predicament when she was outwardly so successful. “It’s not about what you have or don’t have. People talk about physical fitness, but mental health is equally important,” she said.

Somy Ali, a former actor, and currently, a social worker who runs an organization, No More Tears, for abused immigrant women in the United States, has continued to speak about her own experience when she was only five-years-old. “When I am invited for a talk at high schools and universities in the US, I share this with the students. I believe sharing my personal experiences would encourage others to speak out and not be ashamed about being a victim,” .

Talking about one’s painful past can empower individuals and can have a positive impact on society.
